Marma Energy Healing in Ayurveda

Marma healing is an ancient Ayurvedic practice dating back 5,000 years that focuses on opening energy channels to promote healing of the body, mind, and spirit. The term "marma" comes from the Sanskrit language and refers to vulnerable points on the body. Marma healing utilizes the energy from these points for healing purposes.

When used as a self-treatment or administered by a practitioner, Marma energy healing can have an immediate healing and relaxation effect on the body. It involves applying subtle or more profound stimulation on the marma points, which we can restore the proper connection between the subtle body (our internal energy, moods and emotions) and the physical body (our material condition), resulting in increased health and vitality on both levels.

Marma Therapy has had an impact on the evolution of Chinese acupuncture. Therefore, both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines share a belief that energy (known as Prana in Ayurveda) can become stagnant in Marma points, and both traditions aim to release this energy in their healing practices.

What Are The Marma Points

Marma points serve as gateways to the seven Chakras, which are centers in the body where energy flows through. There are a total of 107 Marma points throughout the human body. These points are where veins (Sira), ligaments (Snayu), muscles (Mamsa), bones (Asthi), and joints (Sandhi) intersect.

Examples of a few Marma points in the body are:

  • Talahridaya, located at the heart of the hand
  • Indrabasti, which refers to the arrow of the god Indra and is located in the center of the calf muscle
  • Phana, is located at the side of the nostrils and controls Prana, the sense organ of smell, the nasal passages and sinuses.

What Happens During the Marma Energy Healing

Marma healing involves gentle stimulation of specific points on the body, which effectively removes blockages from the marma points, leading to physical and psychological relaxation and strength. This powerful therapy works with subtle and sensitive energy points known as srothas, to open up energy channels in the body. Through gentle pressure on the skin, Marma points can be stimulated to initiate a chain of positive reactions in the body.

Marma healing energy is a traditional Ayurvedic massage technique that aims to sustain the flow of energy throughout the body. These therapy sessions involve the stimulation of Marma points situated around the body. The stimulation of these points is believed to impact various aspects of the body's health, including the organs' well-being and hormone production. Through manipulation of marmas, prana can be directed to remove blockages, improve energy flow or tap hidden energy reserves.
